From Manjaro, with Love: failed retrieving file 'core.files'

28 Nov 2016

In Manjaro if you run sudo pacman -Fs file_in_question and get:

warning: database file for 'core' does not exist
warning: database file for 'extra' does not exist
warning: database file for 'community' does not exist
warning: database file for 'multilib' does not exist

You might later find out that you need to initialize the file database using sudo pacman -Fy or call sudo pacman -Syy.

If you are using Arch Linux or Antergos.

Unfortunately Manjaro repositories do not support the file database. And so you will get an error similar to the title of this article:

error: failed retrieving file 'core.files' from www.mirrorservice.org : The requested URL returned error: 404
error: failed retrieving file 'core.files' from nl.mirror.babylon.network : The requested URL returned error: 404
error: failed retrieving file 'core.files' from mirrors.cicku.me : The requested URL returned error: 404
...

And so on.

If you are using Manjaro, you are out of luck: Manjaro doesn't support querying a file database.

I think I will be switching to Antergos because it uses the same packages as Arch Linux.
